Book to Film Adaptations Currently Streaming on Netflix

1. A Series of Unfortunate Events

Based on the A Series of Unfortunate Events series by Lemony Snicket, this Netflix original series stars Neil Patrick Harris.

2. iBoy

This Netflix original series is based on the book by Kevin Brooks about a boy who wakes from a coma only to find technology embedded in his brain. The series stars Bill Milner, Maisie Williams, and Miranda Richardson.

3. The Road

Cormac McCarthy’s grim book about a boy and his father roaming scorched America is an equally grim movie. Now streaming on Netflix, the film stars Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron, and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

4. No Country for Old Men

Based on another Cormac McCarthy novel, No Country for Old Men tells what happens when a man stumbles on a drug deal gone bad and takes off with the money, setting off a violent chain of events. The award-winning film stars Tommy Lee, Jones, Javier Bardem, and Josh Brolin.

5. To Kill a Mockingbird

Harper Lee’s classic coming of age novel is also a classic film starring Gregory Peck. Look for a very young Robert Duvall to make an appearance!

6. Friday Night Lights

Before it was a series it was a film, and before it was a film it was a book by H.G. Bissinger called Friday Night Lights: A Town, A Team, A Dream. The series, starring Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton is one of Netflix’s one of most popular.

7. The Great Gatsby

The 1974 film adaptation (there have been several) of F.Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel is also available for streaming on Netflix. It stars Robert Redford and Mia Farrow.

8. Cold in July

After a man kills a burglar who broke into his home, the thief’s father seeks revenge. The film adaptation of Cold in July stars Michael C. Hall, Don Johnson, and Sam Shepard.

9. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

The film adaptation of John Le Carre’s spy thriller is streaming on Netflix for all to enjoy.

10. Gomorrah

Based on Roberto Saviano’s account of his journey into organized crime in Naples, Italy.

11. Orange is the New Black

Though Netflix’s original series Orange is the New Black bears little resemblance to Piper Kerman’s memoir of the same name, the TV version is a fan favorite, currently entering its 5th season.

12. Great Expectations

There are currently two film adaptations of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations on Netflix. The 1998 adaptation features Ethan Hawken and Gwenyth Paltrow, while the 2012 version stars Ralph Fiennes and Sally Hawkins.

13. House of Cards

There are two adaptations of Michael Dobbs’ House of Cards currently streaming on Netflix. The original UK mini-series from 1990 starring Ian Richardson and Susannah Harker and the very popular Netflix original series starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright.

14. Anna Karenina

Though there have been several film adaptations of Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina produced over the years, it’s the 2012 version that’s currently streaming on Netflix.

15. The Shining

It’s no secret that the adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining wasn’t appreciated by its author. However, there’s no denying it’s a fan favorite. Currently streaming on Netflix, the film version of The Shining stars Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duvall.

16. The Diary of Anne Frank

The 2009 mini-series version of The Diary of Anne Frank is currently streaming on Netflix. It stars Kate Ashfield and Geoff Brenton.

17. The Butler

Lee Daniels’ film adaptation of Wil Haygood’s The Butler is a not-to be missed flick. Catch it while it’s streaming on Netflix.

18. Alice Through the Looking Glass

Johnny Depp reprises his role as The Mad Hatter in the 2016 remake of Lewis Carroll’s classic.

19. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

This visually stunning adaptation of The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe stars Tilda Swinton, William Moseley, and James McAvoy.

20. The Fundamentals of Caring

The Fundamentals of Caregiving by Jonathan Evison has been adapted into a Netflix original film starring Paul Rudd, Selena Gomez, and Craig Roberts.

21. Atonement

The film adaptation of Ian McEwan’s Atonement is currently streaming on Netflix and features Keira Knightly and James McAvoy in starring roles.

22. The Crucible


Arthur Miller’s classic play about the Salem witchcraft hysteria was made into a movie in 1996. Starring Wynonna Ryder and Daniel Day-Lewis, The Crucible, is must-see Netflix fare.

23.Hemlock Grove

Brian McGreevy’s novel about a murder in a town filled with secrets was made into a Netflix original series. Though Hemlock Grove was canceled after three seasons, you can still stream every episode.

24. The 100

Past episodes of this popular CW series are currently available for Netflix streaming. If you’re a fan of The 10, you might also like to check out the series of books by Kass Morgan.

25. Jane Eyre

The 2011 adaptation of Charlotte Bronte’s classic is currently streaming. It stars Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender,  and Jamie Bell.

26. August: Osage County

The Critically acclaimed book and play, August: Osage County, was remade into a movie in 2013. It stars Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, and Chris Cooper.

27. Bridget Jones’ Diary

Bridget Jones’ Diary was adapted to film in 2001. It stars Renee Zellweger, Hugh Grant, and Colin Firth.

28. Twilight

Stephanie Meyers’ fan favorite about sparkly vampires was adapted to film in 2008. It stars Robert Pattinson and Kristin Stewart.

29. Rising Sun

Rising Sun by Michael Crichton was adapted into film in 1993. It stars Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes and you can catch it Netflix!

30. Hugo

Brian Selznick’s stunning book was adapted into an equally stunning film in 2011. It stars Ben Kingsley, Sascha Baron Cohen, Asa Butterfield, and Chloe Grace Moretz.

31. The Little Prince

Back in the day, The Little Prince was assigned reading for many high school students, and bonus points if you read the untranslated version in French class. It’s also been translated to screen several times, and the 2015 animated version is now streaming.

32. The BFG

Roald Dahl’s classic children’s tale about a Big Friendly Giant received the Disney treatment in 2016. Lending their voices to the film adaptation of The BFG are Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill, and Penelope Wilton.

33. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Another Roald Dahl classic! The 2005 film adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Family stars Johnny Depp.

34. Children of the Corn

The creepy 1984 film adaptation of Stephen King’s short story, Children of the Corn remains a cult favorite. It stars Peter Horton and Linda Hamilton.

35. Thinner

Stephen King is making an impressive showing on our list – and on Netflix. The adaptation of his novel about an obese man who finds himself on the wrong end of a gypsy curse stars Joe Mantegna.

36. Cujo

Yet another adaptation of a Stephen King novel! Cujo, the story of a rabid dog who terrorizes a small town, stars Dee Wallace, Daniel Hugh Kelly, and Danny Pintauro.

37. The Physician

Noah Gordon’s novel about a young man who disguises himself as a Jew so he can attend a school that doesn’t accept Christians was adapted to film in 2013. The Physician stars Tom Payne, Stellan Skarsgård, and Olivier Martinez.

38. Night Train to Lisbon

The film adaptation of Pascal Mercier’s Night Train to Lisbon stars Jeremy Irons, Melanie Laurent, and Jack Huston.

39. The Giver

The film remake of Lois Lowry’s Newberry Medal -winning novel stars Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep.

40. How I Live Now

How I Live Now was made into a movie in 2013 and is currently available for streaming.

41. The Big Short

The adaptation of Michael Lewis’ novel about men who take on the banks after the collapse of the housing market stars Christian Bale, Steve Carrell, and Ryan Gosling.

42. Around the World in 80 Days

This isn’t the first time Jules Verne’s classic Around the World in 80 Days was adapted to film, but it’s the most current version.

43. Paddington

The beloved story of Paddington Bear comes to life in this 2014 adaptation. It stars Hugh Bonneville and Sally Hawkins.

44. Dexter

Jeff Lindsay’s Darkly Dreaming Dexter was adapted into a series for Showtime. Starring Michael C. Hall, this show about a serial killer working in forensics is also available on Netflix.

45. The Three Musketeers

The 2011 remake of The Three Musketeers stars Logan Lerman, Matthew Macfadyen, and Ray Stevenson.

Agatha Christie’s portly sleuth comes alive in this series.

46. Sherlock

Benedict Cumberbatch plays everyone’s favorite sleuth in this PBS series which is also streaming on Netflix.

47. Cheaper by the Dozen

Cheaper by the Dozen, the hysterical true story about a family with 12 kids, was also made into a hysterical movie in 1950. It stars Clifton Webb and Myrna Loy.

48. Glengarry Glen Ross

David Mamet’s comedy about ruthless realtors was adapted to film in 1992. Al Pacino, Alec Baldwin, and Kevin Spacey star.

49. Beasts of No Nation

Uzodinma Iweala’s intense novel about a child soldier in an unnamed African country stars Abraham Attah, Emmanuel Affadzi,  and Ricky Adelayitor.

50. The Lazarus Project

The film adaptation of the award-winning novel The Lazarus Project stars the late Paul Walker and Piper Perabo.

51. The Verdict

Barry C. Reed’s novel The Verdict was adapted in 1982 and stars Paul Newman.

52. The African Queen

The 1935 Novel, The African Queen, is also a 1951 film classic starring Humphrey Bogard and Audrey Hepburn.

53. The Nanny Diaries

The film adaptation of The Nanny Diaries stars Scarlett Johansson, Laura Linney, and Paul Giamatti.

54. Under the Tuscan Sun

The story of a writer who buys a villa in Tuscany, Under the Tuscan Sun, stars Diane Lane, Sandra Oh, and Raoul Bova.

55. The Paper Chase

Before it was a series it was a film, and before it was a film it was a novel. The 1973 film adaptation of The Paper Chase stars Timothy Bottoms, Lindsay Wagner, and John Houseman.

56. Before I Go to Sleep

S.J. Watson’s thriller, Before I Go to Sleep, was adapted to film in 2014. It stars Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth, and Mark Strong.

57. Waffle Street

James Adams’ riches to rags memoir was adapted to film in 2015. It stars James Lafferty and Danny Glover.

58. Devil’s Knot

The true story of the West Memphis Three, Devil’s Knot is the story of three teens who were wrongfully accused of the murder of three young boys. The film adaptation stars Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon.

59. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

A nine-year-old searches new york city for a mysterious lock that fits a key his father left behind after he was killed on 9/11. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close stars Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock and Thomas Horn.

60. Palm Trees in the Snow

Palm Trees in the Snow was adapted to film in 2015 and stars Mario Casas, Adriana Ugarte, Macarena García.

61. The Boys from Brazil

Ira Levin’s thriller about a plot to create a Fourth Reich was adapted to film in 1978. The Boys from Brazil stars Gregory Peck, Laurence Olivier, and James Mason.

62. Jurassic Park

The movie version of Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park was a blockbuster success. It stars Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, and Sam Neil.

63. The Lost World

Michael Crichton’s follow up novel to Jurassic Park was followed up in a movie sequel as well. Jeff Goldblum reprises his role in The Lost World.
